wrapped in its arms
this early June,
the sky spinner sits
for long hours on a low baluster
and spins the woolen clouds
onto a spindle, tirelessly -
shaping the moist monsoon;

and like a giggling spring rose,
evident in boundless joys of unaccounted
profits; winds up her trade for this season.

This morning, I learnt from one of my friends back in Mumbai, that first rains of the monsoon had arrived. I felt celebratory even though I am thousands of miles away. I don’t know why. And it is almost futile to seek an explanation because there isn’t any available. All I can say is Mumbai Rains are special.

Monsoon in Mumbai is different, say from Calcutta where when it rains, it does so incessantly. Looking at the skies you can predict whether or not it would rain and most of the time your personal forecast would hit the bulls’ eye. Mumbai skies, during monsoon, are almost perennially covered with clouds, which look extremely inviting. You can feel the air that says it can rain anytime. But then she is temperamental. She would dress up, looking like she is on a rampage to kill someone with her drop dead gorgeous looks and then she might just slump in her chair and decide not to go to the party. Sitting in that chair she would look outside the balcony as if she were lost in her present surroundings.

In Mumbai you can get caught in the rains at most unexpected times. Even when you don’t see any clouds, and the sky is as clear as a plain white paper on a canvas, it would just take minutes to form a cloud formation and then .. it would simply rain. Its unpredictability is its highlight. And unpredictability is non-monotonous. There is a beauty in random, non-routine but there is also a definite rhyme and rhythm to it. When it rains in Mumbai, it rains poetically. And needless to say, I miss the Mumbai Rains.

Rain can be a powerful medium

Big magic for those attuned

Mumbai and her people are blessed indeed

To have such playful and intuitive rains to speak with

How telling that although you are no longer there
You still listen for them
Still feel their wisdom and joy

What a wonderful picture you paint!

The people in parts of Africa would dearly love to share some of that rain with you. At the moment, we are having a little too much rain, but it have made our landscape very green.

best wishes
Annie

I would love to have the sort of rain in here in Oman ..how inviting yet shy to rain when all hr clouds are ready to spill her soul..yet her time is not when all we think is about to fall..when all forgotten she drops lovingly ..Poetic

What a sensual post Alok!

I love the poetry at the beginning, particularly the imagery of the wool and spindle - exceptional!

Then the post itself - magical... a colourful and exotic journey for me. Now I want to visit Mumbai and experience those rains for myself. An ancestor once lived there for a while and I wonder if there is a trace of him there still.

Your words also reminded me of one of my favourite film scenes.

Thank you for such a lovely escape from a cold June evening :-D

I loved the poem, but your description of the monsoon in Mumbai was wonderful! I can't imagine being there during that time of year.

nice little poem.. and the description of mumbai rains.. well .. never been to mumbai but monsoon has arrived here in my city .. 2 weeks early .. and the way it rains here is unique in its own way .. it mostly drizzles.. seldom deluges but the scent of soil is the most special .. :)

pS- Nice to see a post from you after such a long gap .. keep writing..

Priya: indeed so ... I had an inkling that you would like those lines :) thanks a lot

bobb: Welcome and thanks for that wonderful comment

-----------------------------------------

Annie: thanks for your thoughts

-----------------------------------------

Jeevs: Very true. Infact can be very nasty. I myself was part of the 26th July deluge .... but the problem is man-made. Mumbai Rains would have been the same even without the faulty infrastructure of Mumbai .... If we just consider the rains ... they indeed are beautiful

---------------------------------------

Nasra: that was such a lovely comment. thanks a ton for ur beautiful words

-----------------------------------------

Miladysa: thanks a lot for that fantastic comment. i am simply bowled over :) thanks again

------------------------------------------

Keshi: yes they indeed bring out deep emotions from within that are otherwise hidden in our hearts

-----------------------------------------

Andrew: thanks a lot for your words

-----------------------------------------

Aria: thanks for the encouragement. the gap has been both due to the very tight schedule that I am having at the moment as also the fact that there has been nothing to write about :) as for the delhi rains , I think that is the beauty of India. Every region is so unique in its own ways. each one of them have their own identity ... thanks for sharing

Wow it dawns beautifully here! This southwest monsoon brings little drops here rarely and if we expect to pour when clouds form it disappoint. I wish Mumbai won’t get struck because of this monsoon.

for me, it never rains in mumbai or delhi or kolkata, or in place on earth, it just rains in my heart... the place doesn't matter for me, the rain does, and the love it reminds me of...
